Our eyes start "working" the moment we open them in the morning.  Our eyes help us to navigate around the complex world, they help us to communicate and even to connect with the person and things that we love.  So it is important to do the right things to keep them happy!!  Here are 9 things we can easily do.

1. When using computer:

Ideally the computer monitor should be:

  • Situated directly in your line of sight
  • 5 to 15 degrees below your line of sight
  • At least 60 cm away from your eyes

Working in adequate light is essential for comfortable vision. Avoid annoying reflections which add to visual stress by turning your screen away from windows and bright lights.

2. Have your eyes examined at least once every 2 years

Regular comprehensive eye tests ensure your eyes are healthy and that you are wearing spectacles most suited to your individual needs.  If computer work occupies a large part of your working day you may benefit from spectacles specifically designed for the computer screen.   The Comprehensive eye exam is very thorough and can detect early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and cataract before you are even aware of any symptoms.   Your eyes should be examined at least once every 2 years and if you are a contact lens wearer, once every 12 months.

3. Protect your eyes from the sun

Protection from UV-light is critical as these rays can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium and cancer.   Many of our designer sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses to ensure that you enjoy clear, comfortable vision whilst staying fashionable.  For people who wish to enjoy the convenience of wearing the same pair of glasses for both indoor and outdoor activities, you may like to consider transition lenses that darken to reduce glare when outdoors.

4. Regular Breaks

Try to take regular breaks when working for prolonged periods at a screen. Relaxing your eyes by looking out the window for a few seconds can help to prevent ocular fatigue.   A tip is to remember “20-20-20”.  For every 20 minutes of near work, look at something 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds.

5. Forgetting to Blink

When focusing on a particular task we can sometimes forget to blink, this will allow our eye to be dehydrated and become uncomfortable.  Many people working in air-conditioned environment can suffer from dry eyes symptoms while concentrating on a computer screen.   Reminding yourself to blink can prevent this and ocular lubricants can be sometimes advised by the optometrist.

6. Consider your eye health at work

With longer working hours and an increase in the use of technologies such as computers, our eyes are being put under more and more strain.  To avoid eyestrain take regular breaks.  Breaks will not only relax the eyes but the whole body as well.  A good rule to follow is the 20-20-20 rule; every 20 minutes of looking at the computer screen, turn your head and try to look at an object placed greater than 20 feet (6 metres) away. This changes the focal length and relaxes your eyes; a must for tired eyes.

7. Take care of your contact lenses

If you wear contact lenses, regular aftercare eye examinations are vital to ensure your prescription is still suitable, that lenses are still fitting comfortably and that your eyes remain healthy.

To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before inserting or removing your contact lenses.  If you wear fortnightly, monthly or extended wear contact lenses, ensure you clean them properly after every wear and replace them appropriately.

8. Know your family’s eye history

It is important that you know your family’s eye history as various eye conditions, for example: Glaucoma, is often hereditary.  This will help to determine if you are at a higher risk of developing an eye condition.  If you have a family history of any eye conditions it is essential that your eyes be examined at least once every 2 years so that early signs of an eye condition can be detected in an effort to prevent sight loss.

9. Don’t ignore eye signs and symptoms

If you notice any changes in your vision, headaches or pain in or around your eyes, or any other signs or symptoms don’t ignore them.
